The Head of the “Plant Cell Biotechnology” Department of CPSBB was elected as a member of the Management Board of Bulgarian Academy of Sciences
On March 10, 2025, Prof. Dr. Milen Georgiev was elected as a member of the 27-member Management Board of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) for a term of four years.
The Management Board of BAS is the governing body that ensures the implementation of the decisions of the General Assembly. Among the most important functions of the Management Board are the preparation and proposal of decisions affecting the activities of BAS, the election of directors of permanent scientific units, the organization of periodic attestation of independent scientific units and the organization of general academic international cooperation.
Currently, Prof. Dr. Milen Georgiev is the only scientist from Plovdiv who is a member of the Management Board. He has been working at BAS for over 23 years. He started as a PhD student in 2002, and in 2007, after winning a competition, he was elected as an assistant professor. Three years later – after successful habilitation – he is among the youngest Bulgarian scientists with the academic title of “associate professor”, and since 2020, he has held the academic title of “professor”. Since the same year, he has been the Head of the “Metabolomics” Laboratory at the “Stefan Angeloff” Institute of Microbiology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, which he currently leads.
Prof. Georgiev is the author of over 200 scientific publications. He is a four-time winner of the Pythagoras Award of the Ministry of Education and Science (2011, 2015, 2020 and 2024) and is the only scientist in Bulgaria to have been awarded four times. Since 2020, he has been included for the fifth consecutive year among the top 2% of scientists in the world ranking of most cited researchers globally in all scientific disciplines.
In 2014, Prof. Georgiev joined the team on the “PlantaSYST” project, led by Prof. Tsanko Gechev. In 2015, the team established the first Bulgarian Center of Excellence in Plant Systems Biology and Biotechnology – CPSBB in Plovdiv. At the Center, Prof. Georgiev is Head of the “Plant Cell Biotechnology” department. The research of the scientific team, led by Prof. Georgiev, is focused on the biosynthesis of biologically active substances and the development of biotechnological approaches for sustainable bioproduction, metabolomics and molecular pharmacology, with a focus on longevity, obesity and skin photoaging.
