Eugene completed his PhD degree in a joint programme between the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and the University of Potsdam, Germany. His research focused on two extreme traits in plants: vegetative desiccation tolerance and nickel hyperaccumulation, where he assembled and analyzed the genomes of resurrection plants and hyperaccumulators. His interests mainly focus on studying plant stress responses and evolutionary biology, by applying comparative genomics and transcriptomics analyses.
