Students from the University of Food Technology in Plovdiv visited CPSBB

First- and second-year students from the University of Food Technologies (UFT) in Plovdiv visited the research complex of CPSBB as part of their practical training in food and pharmaceutical biotechnologies. The future biotechnologists were welcomed by Assoc. Prof. Liliya Mihaylova, a researcher at the Plant Cell Biotechnology Department of CPSBB. During the visit, she introduced the students to the opportunities offered at CPSBB for educational and professional development, as well as the Center’s accreditation for PhD training in the field of Biotechnology. The students had the opportunity to learn about the model organism C. elegans, which researchers at CPSBB use to study complex molecular processes for obesity and longevity research. Assoc. Prof. Mihaylova also presented the basic principles of microscope operation, preparation of nutrient media, and fundamental laboratory practices used in modern biotechnological research.
During the visit, the students also explored a bioreactor system specialized for experiments and cultivation of plant species, as well as for the production of valuable natural compounds with applications in science, pharmaceuticals, and industry.
Particular interest was sparked by the presentation of some of the international projects carried out by CPSBB scientists and the opportunities they provide for young researchers and PhD students from Bulgaria and abroad. Among them is the NatGenCrop project, within which three young scientists from Italy, Greece, and South Africa are currently pursuing their doctoral studies at the Center.
As part of the tour, the students visited the Center’s laboratory complex, where they became acquainted with some of the highly specialized equipment used for the analysis of plant samples and the study of biologically active compounds.
Visits like these are an important part of students’ practical education, creating a valuable connection between theoretical academic preparation and real-world research practice. The collaboration between CPSBB and educational institutions aims to encourage the development of future specialists who can further develop their education in a professional environment and build world-class research careers in Bulgaria.
